Nancy Nelson, who received her PhD in Education from the University of Texas at Austin, continues her longtime career as a scholar and educator. She publishes as Nancy Nelson but has also published as Nancy Nelson Spivey. Her current positions are Elena and Albert LeBlanc Endowed Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University and Professor Emeritus at the University of North Texas. In addition to these universities, she has served on the faculty of the College of William and Mary, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and also
Carnegie Mellon University, where she was affiliated with the national Center for the Study of Writing and Literacy.
She is best known for her ongoing research in academic writing, especially source-based writing (which she termed discourse synthesis) as well as her work on constructivist theory and reading-writing connections. The latter include The Constructivist Metaphor: Reading, Writing, and the Making of Meaning (Academic Press, recently republished by Brill) and a co-edited volume, The Reading-Writing Connection (University of Chicago Press).
Her international activities on six continents include numerous invited addresses, conference papers, seminars, and research collaborations. She has also sponsored guest lecturers and visiting scholars from other countries.
She continues to write, to present conference papers, and to review articles for journals. She also coaches graduate students and early career university faculty on their scholarly writing.
